Typetalk for Individuals

Typetalk Relay
Typetalk and TextDirect allows people who use a textphone to communicate with people who use a standard telephone by simply using the TextDirect access codes, 18001 for textphone users and 18002 for telephone users. This section gives you simple guidelines of how to make and receive calls.

Relay Assist
Relay Assist provides the same facilities as TextDirect’s 18001 and 18002 access via TextDirect but with a Typetalk Relay Operator setting up the call and assisting with the conversation. Relay Assist is ideal for people who are not used to using the telephone or for hearing people who are unsure how to communicate with deaf people.

Emergency 18000
Textphone users can dial the emergency services, Police, Fire, Ambulance, and Coast Guard by dialling 18000. This service is the same as 999 but in text. When you dial 18000 your call will be answered by the emergency service and a Typetalk Operator will be connected instantly to help with the call.

Text to text
Text to text, or 180015, is an option for you if you are sure you are calling another textphone. With this service you are guaranteed that a Typetalk Operator will not be involved with your call, however, if a hearing person does answer your call you will not have the option of the help of a Typetalk Operator.

Billing and Rebate
Although there is no additional charge for using TextDirect and Typetalk Operators all callers will be charged for the call they make just like a standard telephone call. The actual charge and text rebate is dependent on the telephone service provider.
